Ernst Winter (19), was a German man who went missing from Konitz on 11 March 1900 after he had left the house where he was boarding. Goebel remains the only state governor in the United States to die by assassination while in office. The next day the dying Goebel was sworn in and, despite the best efforts of eighteen physicians attending him, died on the afternoon of 3 February 1900.
